Biblical Scholar, Theologian & Author; Abram S. Clemens Professor of Biblical Studies at Eastern University
Pete Enns Biography
Peter Enns is a biblical scholar, theologian, and author known for his contributions to biblical studies and theology. Enns holds a doctorate from Harvard University and has served as a full professor of Old Testament and Biblical Hermeneutics at Westminster Theological Seminary. He teaches and writes on topics including the Old Testament, New Testament, Second Temple Judaism, and the intersection of biblical scholarship and contemporary Christian faith. Enns has taught at institutions such as Westminster Theological Seminary, Princeton Theological Seminary, Harvard Divinity School, Fuller Theological Seminary, Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, and Biblical Theological Seminary.
Enns gained recognition with the publication of the book "Inspiration and Incarnation: Evangelicals and the Problem of the Old Testament." The book's reception led to significant debate within evangelical circles and the end of his teaching tenure at Westminster Theological Seminary. Following this, Enns focused on making biblical scholarship accessible to a broader audience. His works include "The Bible Tells Me So," "The Sin of Certainty," "How the Bible Actually Works," "Curveball: When Your Faith Takes Turns You Never Saw Coming," "The Bible and the Believer: How to Read the Bible Critically and Religiously," and "The Evolution of Adam: What the Bible Does and Doesn't Say about Human Origins."
In his writing, Enns explores the idea that the Bible serves as a tool for spiritual growth, encouraging readers to seek wisdom rather than simple answers. In "Curveball: When Your Faith Takes Turns You Never Saw Coming," Enns addresses how experiences that challenge inherited beliefs—such as those related to cosmology, evolutionary biology, or historical criticism—can prompt deeper faith through questioning and doubt.
Enns is also the co-host of the podcast "The Bible for Normal People" with Jared Byas. The show features interviews with scholars and theologians, discussions on biblical interpretation, and resources for engaging scripture critically. Guests have included Rob Bell, Richard Rohr, Brian McLaren, Jodi Magness, and Rachel Held Evans. The podcast is recognized for fostering open conversations about the Bible for both religious and non-religious audiences.
Enns serves as the Abram S. Clemens Professor of Biblical Studies at Eastern University, where he continues to teach and write on biblical interpretation, theology, and the relationship between faith and scholarship.
