Edith Treviño Biography

Dr. Edith Treviño, known professionally as Dr. ET, is a presenter, storyteller, author, and bilingual and ESL educator based on the Texas-Mexico border, a region she refers to as La Frontera. An immigrant from Coahuila, Mexico, Treviño served in the United States Army Reserves before focusing her career on education and advocacy for emergent bilingual students. She holds a doctorate in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis on bilingual studies from The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, a master of education from Sul Ross State University, and a bachelor of science in elementary education from Edinboro University in Pennsylvania.

Treviño is an author whose work includes professional educator resources and children's literature. She is the co-author of "The Death of My Mexican Name," published by Rethinking Bilingual Education, and the author of children's books such as "I'm María, The Family Translator" and "La Chancla's True Story." Her professional titles include "The ESL & Bilingual Teacher Toolkit," "Write to Speak: Student Toolkit," "SPEAK IT: Write It," "Teacher Guidebook," and the "Dr. ET's Notes" series, which supports educators preparing for bilingual certification exams including the BTLPT and ESL supplemental tests. Her guide, "Teaching in the Time of Covid: A Toolkit for Teachers," has ranked among the top 100 on Amazon in the Crisis Management category.

Treviño's research centers on border life in La Frontera, with a focus on trauma, displacement, culture, and historical trauma, and how these experiences affect education. Her doctoral research examined teacher perceptions of Mexican immigrant students' experiences with border violence on the Texas-Mexico border, informing both her writing and keynote presentations.

As an education consultant and keynote speaker, Treviño addresses audiences nationwide on topics such as bilingual education, diversity and inclusion, Hispanic heritage, empowerment, veterans' experiences, and understanding students' lived experiences and trauma. She developed the free online program for children called "Little Sponges." Treviño has presented at national conferences, including the Oklahoma Association for Bilingual Education, and at community events such as the Aldine ISD Festival de Primavera. Her work is shaped by her immigrant background, military service, and classroom experience, positioning her as an advocate for bilingual learners and the educators who support them.
