Jamie Paik Biography

Dr. Jamie Paik is a robotics researcher and professor of mechanical engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), where she serves as vice dean of the School of Engineering and is the founder and director of the Reconfigurable Robotics Lab. Paik is also a core member of the Swiss National Centers of Competence in Research Robotics group. She completed her doctoral studies at Seoul National University, focusing on the design of a humanoid arm and hand, and continued with postdoctoral research in Paris and at Harvard University. At the Institut des Systems Intelligents et de Robotic at Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paik developed internationally patented and commercialized laparoscopic tools. At Harvard University's Microrobotics Laboratory, she began developing unconventional robots that explore the physical limits of materials and mechanisms.

At EPFL, Paik has contributed to advancements in soft robotics, developing machines known as robogamis. These self-morphing robotic origami transform their planar shapes into two- or three-dimensional forms by folding in predefined patterns and sequences, similar to origami. The Reconfigurable Robotics Lab specializes in multi-material fabrication and smart material actuation for innovative robot designs. Paik's soft robots have commercial applications, including robotic surgical tools and haptic joysticks that provide realistic force feedback. She also co-founded Foldaway-Haptics, a start-up focused on expanding industrial applications of soft robotics.

Paik's research has been featured in publications such as Nature, Science, IEEE Transactions on Robotics, and Soft Robotics Journal. Her work includes the integration of robogami technology into automotive concepts, such as Mercedes's concept car Avatar, where reconfigurable and morphing airfoils demonstrated the potential of soft robotics in real-world applications. The Reconfigurable Robotics Lab develops interactive, reconfigurable soft robots for medical, rehabilitation, search and rescue, personal, and wearable robotics.

Paik is an active public speaker in the fields of science and technology, presenting on topics such as embedded intelligence for adaptive automation via reconfigurable robots. Her TED Talk on origami robots that reshape and transform themselves highlights her work at the intersection of materials science, engineering, and human-machine interaction. Paik's research in soft robotics, robogami technology, and adaptive automation continues to influence the development of robotics for automotive, medical, space, and wearable systems.
