Dr. Uchenna Lizmay Umeh, known as Dr. Lulu or The Momatrician, is a Nigerian-born, board-certified pediatrician, TEDx speaker, and bestselling author with a career spanning clinical medicine, military service, and youth advocacy. Umeh completed her pediatric residency at Howard University Hospital and launched a private practice in South Carolina, where she practiced for 13 years before commissioning into the U.S. Air Force as a lieutenant colonel. She served as commander at Maxwell AFB Alabama and as medical director of the flagship pediatric ambulatory clinic at Lackland AFB. After completing her active duty term with an honorable discharge, Umeh returned to the civilian workforce with CommuniCare Healthcare Centers in San Antonio, Texas.
Following the suicides of a patient and several physician colleagues, as well as a serious suicide attempt by a young patient, Umeh shifted her focus to youth mental health and suicide prevention. She founded Teen Alive, an online teen wellness resource dedicated to raising awareness about teen depression and suicide. Umeh is also CEO of Dr. Lulu's Coaching & Consulting Lounge and Dr. Lulu's Angels Foundation, both serving at-risk LGBTQ+ youth and their families with a focus on suicide prevention. Her experience raising a transgender daughter led her to establish Dr. Lulu's PRIDE Corner, a gender-affirming coaching and consulting practice.
As an author, Umeh has published several books, including "A Teen's Life," which explores the challenges faced by teenagers, and "How to Teach Your Children About Racism," which debuted at number one in multiple categories on Amazon. She is a freelance writer and contributor to publications such as Washington Post, Parents Magazine, The Black Parenting Magazine, and KevinMD.com. As a national keynote speaker on bullying, teen depression, and suicide prevention, her books complement the expertise she shares at events across the country.
Umeh has been interviewed by Oprah, CBS This Morning with Gayle King, and The Diaspora Show on Nigerian Television Authority. She participated in Oprah Daily Insider's "The Life You Want" class on service, hosted by Oprah Winfrey. Umeh has received recognition including San Antonio LGBT Chamber Youth Advocate of the Year, honoree by San Antonio Business Journal for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, finalist for the San Antonio National Association of Women Business Owners' Rising Star Award, and Pioneer of the Year at the Trans Life Awards in Atlanta. She is also a corporate consultant and adjunct professor, providing expertise on youth mental health, LGBTQ+ inclusion, and parental support.
