Abdul transitioned into a recording career in the late 1980s, achieving massive success with her debut album Forever Your Girl in 1988. The album produced four No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100—including “Straight Up,” “Forever Your Girl,” “Cold Hearted,” and “Opposites Attract”—a feat that placed her alongside top pop acts of the era.
