Loyle Carner is a British hip-hop musician from South London known for his poetic lyricism, emotional honesty, and genre-blending sound, which have established him as a distinctive voice in UK rap. A musician, writer, director, producer, entrepreneur, and actor, Carner first gained attention with the EP "A Little Late" and developed a signature blend of diaristic lyricism and innovative production. He studied drama at the BRIT School and initially planned to pursue acting before turning to music. Early demos shared with King Krule and Rejjie Snow led to an opening performance in Dublin supporting MF Doom.
Carner's debut album, "Yesterday's Gone," explored personal experiences of grief and the challenges of coming-of-age. The album earned him the Best British Solo Artist honor at the NME Awards, a Mercury Music Prize nomination, and was named album of the year by The Independent. His second album, "Not Waving, But Drowning," continued to address personal and social issues with an introspective approach. Both "Not Waving, But Drowning" and "hugo" reached number three on the UK album chart. "hugo" marked a turning point, delving into themes of Black identity and anger, and was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize.
Carner performed "hugo" live at Royal Albert Hall, joined by guest musicians including Sampha, Jordan Rakei, JNR Williams, John Agard, Wesley Joseph, and Athian Akec. This performance led to the release of "Hugo: Reimagined (Live from the Royal Albert Hall)." He later explored themes of fatherhood and collaboration on the album "hopefully !", which he co-produced. Carner has been twice shortlisted for the Mercury Prize and received further BRIT and NME Award nominations. He has built a global following, with over 1 billion streams, partnerships with brands such as YSL, New Balance, and Nike, and sold-out performances at Alexandra Palace, Wembley Arena, and Royal Albert Hall.
Carner is also recognized for his advocacy for neurodivergent artists and young people, frequently discussing his experiences with ADHD and dyslexia and their influence on his work. He founded the Chilli Con Carner project, offering cooking lessons and mentoring for young people with ADHD. Carner received an honorary doctorate from University of the Arts London in recognition of his advocacy. He has expanded his career into acting, appearing in the BBC drama "Mint." Throughout his career as a rapper, storyteller, advocate, and performer, Carner has contributed to the evolution of British hip-hop and neurodiversity awareness in the arts.
