Edward T. Welburn Jr. is an automobile designer known for his 44-year career at General Motors. Welburn served as General Motors' vice president of global design, a role previously held by Harley Earl and Bill Mitchell. Upon his appointment, he became the first African American to lead a major automotive design house and only the sixth person to lead GM Design in the company's history. Welburn contributed to the design of more than 500 automobiles, including models for Cadillac, Buick, Chevrolet, GMC, Opel/Vauxhall, Holden, Hummer, Saab, Wuling, Baojun, Oldsmobile, Saturn, and Pontiac.
Welburn's interest in automotive design began in childhood. He wrote to a GM designer for advice and was encouraged to continue sketching cars and study industrial design. Welburn attended Howard University, focusing on sculpture and product design. His introduction to General Motors Design came during a college internship, after which he became the first Black American hired to design GM vehicles. Welburn advanced through various studios, designing the Oldsmobile Aerotech speed-record vehicle, which set two world records exceeding 257 miles per hour. As chief designer of the Oldsmobile Studio, he oversaw the creation of the Oldsmobile Antares concept car and the Oldsmobile Intrigue, both recognized by AutoWeek Magazine at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
Welburn was later named vice president, GM Global Design, becoming the first to lead all of the company's global design centers. He established 10 design centers in seven countries, managing a team of 2,500 across the United States, Germany, Korea, China, Australia, Brazil, and India. His leadership produced designs such as the "Corvette," the revived "Camaro," and concept vehicles like the "Cadillac Ciel" and "Buick Avista." Welburn also designed multiple pace cars for the Indianapolis 500 and led the design of the presidential limousine, known as The Beast, for Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump. He recognized the connection between fashion and automotive design, organizing three automotive fashion shows in Detroit and Dubai, where GM concept cars were showcased alongside fashion industry figures.
Welburn's career has been recognized with several honors. He was named Black Engineer of the Year at the Becoming Everything You Are STEM conference in Washington, D.C., the first GM employee to receive the award. He received an honorary doctorate of fine arts from the College for Creative Studies and was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame. Welburn earned an Emmy Award for Diversity/Equity/Inclusion short-form content. The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture houses the Edward T. Welburn Collection, which includes original drawings, photographs, and artifacts documenting his career and contributions to the African American community.
Following his retirement from GM, Welburn founded The Welburn Group, a design consultancy, and Welburn Media Productions, where he serves as CEO and producer on a film project about African American race car drivers in the 1920s and 1930s. Welburn appeared in Michael Bay's "Transformers 4: Age of Extinction," filmed in part at the GM Design Center, and is featured in the video game "Gran Turismo 7," where his virtual avatar provides insights on GM products. He serves as a judge at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance, and other automotive events. Welburn continues to influence automotive design, media, and culture through his ongoing creative work and public engagement.
