
Dr. Melvin Mahone is an educator, author, and motivational speaker with extensive experience in criminal justice, public service, and higher education. Mahone serves as a full-time assistant sociology professor at Paine College in Augusta, Georgia. He holds a doctorate in criminal justice and corrections from Union Institute and University in Cincinnati, as well as master's and bachelor's degrees from Chicago State University. He has completed post-graduate work in management and public administration at Roosevelt and Chicago State Universities.
Before entering academia, Mahone served in the United States Marine Corps in Vietnam and received an honorable discharge. His career in criminal justice began as a federal protective officer for the General Services Administration, followed by roles with the Bureau of Prisons as a correctional officer and correctional treatment specialist, and as a Florida state probation and parole officer. Mahone has also worked as a mental health worker, drug counselor, and social services career trainee for the state of Illinois. His background in law enforcement, corrections, and social services informs his teaching and public speaking on criminal justice, leadership, and social issues.
Mahone has held academic leadership roles, including dean of criminal justice and security administration at Taylor Business Institute in Chicago and criminal justice department coordinator at Olympic College in Bremerton, Washington. He also served as an associate professor in criminal justice at University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Kentucky. Mahone has developed 25 training and education programs at various colleges and universities and is a frequent speaker and presenter on topics such as leadership, diversity, education, overcoming challenges, stress, and motivation.
As an author, Mahone has published several books, including "Coping With Stress and Building Leadership: One Man's Journey," "Prison Privatization in America: Costs and Benefit," "Diversity in College Education," "Use Your Past to Make You an Effective Leader," and "The Autobiography and Life of a Bureaucrat." These works address leadership, resilience, and social justice in the context of criminal justice and higher education.
Mahone is the founder and owner of GM&M Motivational Speaking & Training. He is a member of the National Speakers Association and a past fellow of the American Institute of Stress. Mahone has been recognized in the International Who's Who of Professionals for his contributions to criminal justice education, public service, and motivational speaking.
