Dave Kovar

Hanshi Dave Kovar is recognized as a significant figure in the martial arts industry, known for his contributions to martial arts instruction, business development, and curriculum innovation. A ninth-degree black belt with rankings in 10 martial arts styles, Kovar has dedicated his career to advancing both the practice and business of martial arts. He began his training as a teenager, following his brother Tim Kovar, and started with Kenpo Karate under Hanshi Bruce Juchnik. Kovar has competed in more than 200 martial arts tournaments in forms and fighting, earning over 90 first-place finishes, including four grand champion sparring titles, and was named California Competitor of the Year.

Kovar expanded his expertise by training with leading martial arts instructors, including Shihan Mikio Nishiuchi in Okinawan Kobudo, George Santana in Serrada Escrima, Remy Presas in Modern Arnis, Grand Master Jhoon Rhee in Tae Kwon Do, Cesar and Ralph Gracie in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Burt Richardson in Jeet Kune Do, and David Dernhardt in Tai Chi. Throughout his career, Kovar has emphasized his roles as martial artist, instructor, and businessman, maintaining a commitment to lifelong learning and professional development.

Kovar opened his first martial arts school with the goal of teaching self-defense and life skills. Alongside his brother, he implemented innovative business practices, expanded to multiple locations, and received industry recognition. After a period of rapid expansion and subsequent consolidation, Kovar navigated financial challenges that shaped his approach to resilience and business management in martial arts.

Kovar founded Kovar Systems to support martial arts school owners in balancing instructional quality with business success. He also established ProMAC, the Professional Martial Arts College, to provide advanced training and business education for martial arts professionals. Kovar is known for his instructional techniques, and his Sacramento facilities attract visitors from around the world. The Martial Arts Industry Association has featured his training videos and articles in its magazine. Kovar has authored several books, including "The Martial Arts Instructor's Toolbox," "A Dad's Toolbox for Better Parenting," and "Brief Moments of Clarity."

Kovar has received the Martial Arts Industry Association Lifetime Achievement Award, joining recipients such as Chuck Norris, Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, and Tony Robbins. He has also been named Instructor of the Year by the U.S. Martial Arts Association and has promoted more than 3,000 students to black belt and higher ranks. Kovar shares his expertise in leadership, high performance, and team building through keynote presentations and workshops. He has also been recognized as the Carmichael Chamber of Commerce Person of the Year for his contributions to youth development and community engagement.
