Zeb Hogan

Dr. Zeb Hogan is a conservation biologist, aquatic ecologist, and photographer whose career centers on the study and protection of the world's largest freshwater fish. Hogan began his academic path at the University of Arizona, earning an undergraduate degree in ecology and evolutionary biology, before pursuing environmental risk assessment at Chiang Mai University in Thailand. During this period, he first encountered the Mekong giant catfish, which influenced his focus on freshwater biodiversity and ecosystem conservation. Hogan later completed his doctorate in ecology at the University of California, Davis.

Hogan is recognized internationally as the host of National Geographic's television series "Monster Fish." On the show, Hogan travels globally in search of megafish—species longer than six feet and heavier than 200 pounds—such as the endangered Mekong giant catfish in Cambodia, the sawfish in Australia, and the giant tarpon in Nicaragua. His research addresses the causes of freshwater biodiversity loss, collaborating with scientists, fishermen, and local communities across multiple countries. Hogan emphasizes the importance of education and community outreach in aquatic conservation.

Hogan was named a National Geographic Fellow in acknowledgment of his work in freshwater fish conservation. In this role, he serves as an expert advisor to National Geographic's freshwater and biodiversity programs. He also holds the position of United Nations Convention on Migratory Species Scientific Councilor for Fish.

Hogan is co-lead of the Wonders of the Mekong project, supported by USAID, which focuses on the Mekong River and its diverse aquatic life. Communication and storytelling are integral to the project's scientific research. Through his Megafishes Project, supported by the National Geographic Society, Hogan identified more than two dozen species classified as "megafishes"—freshwater fish that can reach at least six feet in length or weigh 200 pounds. Many of these species face threats from overfishing, dam construction, pollution, invasive species, and climate change.

Hogan co-authored the book "Chasing Giants: In Search of the World's Largest Freshwater Fish" with journalist Stefan Lovgren. The book explores freshwater science and adventure, recounting species extinctions, rediscoveries, and encounters with large fish. "Chasing Giants" received recognition at the Los Angeles Book Festival in the Wild Card category. In addition to his television and writing work, Hogan lectures at universities, museums, and aquariums, contributing to global freshwater conservation awareness.
