Victor Ambros

Victor R. Ambros, Ph.D., is a Nobel Prize‑winning geneticist and professor of molecular medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He is internationally recognized for pioneering the discovery of microRNA (miRNA), a class of tiny RNA molecules that play a critical role in regulating gene expression — a breakthrough that fundamentally changed our understanding of genetic control and earned him the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Ambros’s research career began at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned both his bachelor’s degree and doctorate in biology, studying genomic structure and replication under Nobel laureate David Baltimore. He later conducted postdoctoral research with H. Robert Horvitz, another Nobel laureate, exploring genetic mechanisms that coordinate developmental timing.

His seminal work in the early 1990s — first identifying microRNA in the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans — revealed previously unknown mechanisms that control gene activity. Today, microRNAs are known to regulate more than half of human genes and play roles in development, cellular function, aging, and disease pathways, including cancer and neurological disorders.

Ambros has received numerous scientific honors over his career, including the Lasker Award, the Gairdner International Award, and the Wolf Prize in Medicine. As a leader in RNA biology, he continues to advance research on gene regulation and molecular mechanisms that shape cellular behavior.
