Troyen A. Brennan, MD, M.P.H. is the Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of CVS Caremark Corporation and CVS Pharmacy, Inc. Brennan is responsible for CVS Caremark Corporation's MinuteClinic, Accordant Health Care, clinical and medical affairs, and health care strategy.
Previously, he served as the Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President of Aetna Inc., where he was responsible for clinical operations, national quality management, disease management and other programs. He directed Aetna's National Quality Management activities and was responsible for Aetna's major public health initiatives, which included racial and ethnic equality, genomics, next-generation consumer-driven health care, the Aetna Compassionate CareSM Program and integrated depression management. As well, he provided oversight for the development of Aetna's clinical policies, as well as Aetna's full range of clinical operations, disease management programs and patient management services.
Dr. Brennan's began his career in the medical and healthcare industry at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, in 1987. At the hospital, Brennan served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Brigham and Women's Physician Hospital Organization from 1997 to 2006 and from 2000 to 2006, he was President and Chief Executive Officer of Brigham and Women's Physicians Organization. While at the hospital, Brennan also served as Director of quality and measurement and improvement and was a practicing Internist. In his roles, he was responsible for managed care contract negotiations, designing both primary care and specialty medical management and incentive programs, and overseeing the merger of seven specialty physician foundations and eight hospital departments into a single physician organization.
In his academic work, he has served as professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School since 1995 and professor of law and public health at Harvard School of Public Health since 1992. Mr. Brennan serves as Director of Bridges to Excellence and Generation Health, Inc. Since 1987, he has published 230 peer-reviewed papers and four books. He is also a frequent presenter on health care policy, ethics and law. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.
Brennan received his MD and M.P.H. degrees from Yale Medical School, his J.D. degree from Yale Law School, and his M.A. degree from Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He graduated with a B.S. from Southern Methodist University in Texas.
