Suzette Vontell Chang

Suzette Vontell Chang is a practicing anthropologist, educator, and equity advocate whose career focuses on the intersection of science, culture, and human identity. Chang holds a master's degree in library and information studies and a master's degree in social-cultural anthropology from the University of Oklahoma. She is the founder and CEO of Thick Descriptions, a nonprofit organization based in Oklahoma City dedicated to science empowerment and cultural intelligence.

Through Thick Descriptions, Chang provides educational services that emphasize the importance of cultural context in science, technology, engineering, anthropology, and math (STEAM). The organization offers tailored learning experiences for students, forums on socio-cultural topics, and training for educators in equitable teaching methods. Thick Descriptions has expanded STEAM education opportunities to historically Black towns in Oklahoma, and more than 1,000 school educators have participated in Oklahoma Educators Evolve to enhance equitable communication with diverse communities. The organization addresses broad questions in both natural and social sciences, examining human identity and the complexities that influence individual and collective engagement.

For more than a decade, Chang has served as a speaker, panelist, and facilitator in equity, diversity, and inclusion conversations. Her work includes leading discussions on social constructs, systemic and default thinking, and a range of socio-cultural anthropology topics. As an information advocate, Chang focuses on the politics of human identity and the impact of labels on human interaction.

Chang's published works include "I Live in Boley, America: Exploring a Contemporary Identity for African-American Boley Residents," published by University of Oklahoma Press, and contributions to Oklahoma Library Association Quarterly. Her contributions to education have been recognized with the William D. Pennington Award for Outstanding Social Studies Teacher, presented by the Oklahoma Historical Society.

Chang has served as director of library services at the City of Guthrie and as chief education officer at National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. She has delivered keynote addresses at the Oklahoma Association of College and Research Libraries Annual Conference, including a presentation on "Accessing and Leveraging AI within Academic Spaces from the Lens of Cultural Anthropology." Chang has also been featured as a speaker in Idaho State University's Anthropology Colloquium series, This is Anthropology! Diverse Applications for the Real World. Her anthropological perspective and commitment to open dialogue position her as a leading voice on issues of human identity, equity, and community engagement in the United States.
