Seth Klarman

Seth Klarman is a hedge fund manager, author, and investor known for his disciplined approach to value investing. He is the chief executive and portfolio manager of The Baupost Group, a Boston-based private investment partnership he co-founded with William J. Poorvu, Howard H. Stevenson, Jordan Baruch, and Isaac Auerbach. Klarman graduated from Harvard Business School, where he was a Baker Scholar, and earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Cornell University.

As CEO and portfolio manager of The Baupost Group, Klarman oversees a firm that manages approximately $26 billion for individual and institutional clients. The firm employs a value investing discipline with an event-driven bias, seeking global opportunities in publicly traded and private equities, distressed debt, and real estate. Klarman is recognized for his patient, research-intensive investment strategy, often holding significant cash positions when suitable opportunities are scarce, which has provided downside protection during market downturns.

Klarman is the author of "Margin of Safety: Risk-Averse Value Investing Strategies for the Thoughtful Investor," a book regarded as influential within the value investing community. He also served as editor for "Security Analysis: Seventh Edition." His annual letters to Baupost investors are widely circulated among investment professionals for their insights into market conditions, valuation, and risk management.

Klarman has been inducted into Institutional Investor Alpha's Hedge Fund Manager Hall of Fame and has received the Harvard Business School Alumni Achievement Award. He has been compared to Warren Buffett and is sometimes referred to as the "Oracle of Boston." Klarman is a member of the board of dean's advisors at Harvard Business School and has served as a senior lecturer on value investing. He chairs the board of directors of the Broad Institute and is chairman of Facing History and Ourselves, an organization focused on educational programs to combat antisemitism and bigotry. Klarman also owns Klaravich Stables Inc. and has received recognition in the horse racing industry, including the Outstanding Owner category at the Eclipse Awards.
