Rupert Spira

Rupert Spira is an English philosopher, author, and former ceramicist known for his work in non-dual spirituality. Based in the United Kingdom, Spira is a proponent of nonduality and what he terms the Direct Path. In his writings on non-duality, Spira describes his approach as the recognition that underlying the multiplicity and diversity of experience is a single, infinite, and indivisible reality, whose nature is pure consciousness. He maintains that this recognition is not only the source of lasting happiness within all people but also the foundation of peace between individuals, communities, and nations.

Spira's journey into spiritual teaching was shaped by decades of inquiry across multiple traditions. His interest in spirituality began at age 15, when he discovered the work of the Persian poet Rumi. Under the guidance of his first teacher, Dr. Francis Roles, Spira learned mantra meditation and was introduced to the classical system of Advaita, or non-duality, which became the foundation of his practice for the next 25 years. He also learned the Mevlevi Turning, a sacred Sufi dance, and immersed himself in the writings of Russian philosopher P. D. Ouspensky and Gurdjieff's Movements. Spira attended Krishnamurti's meetings at Brockwood Park, where he was influenced by Krishnamurti's intellectual rigor and humility. A pivotal turning point came when Spira met his main teacher, Francis Lucille, who introduced him to the teachings of Atmananda Krishna Menon and the Tantric tradition of Kashmir Shaivism, which form the basis of Spira's Direct Path approach to spiritual awakening.

Before dedicating himself to spiritual teaching, Spira had a 30-year career as a studio ceramicist. He was known for his tableware, open bowls, groupings of slender cylinder vessels, and poem bowls, with work held in collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Fitzwilliam Museum, the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, and the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. After three decades as a ceramic artist, Spira closed his studio to focus on sharing the nondual understanding through meetings and writings. His spiritual studies and artistic practice were deeply interconnected, with each informing the other.

The Direct Path, as taught by Spira, offers a practical approach to non-dual realization that emphasizes immediate investigation of direct experience. This method focuses on direct recognition of awareness as the essence of all experience, inviting individuals to turn attention inward toward the knowing presence underlying thoughts, sensations, and perceptions. Spira is the author of 21 books and hosts a podcast where he engages in conversations with thinkers and leaders in spirituality, art, science, mental health, and well-being, exploring the ways innate happiness can be discovered in everyday life.

Spira's written works include titles such as "The Transparency of Things: Contemplating the Nature of Experience," "Presence: The Art of Peace and Happiness," "Being Aware of Being Aware," "You Are the Happiness You Seek," and "Being Myself." He explores nondual awareness at the heart of religious and spiritual traditions such as Advaita Vedanta, Kashmir Shaivism, Hinduism, Buddhism, mystical Christianity, Sufism, and Zen. Spira maintains a prominent YouTube channel featuring teachings, guided meditations, and dialogues on non-duality, with a substantial global audience. He holds regular retreats in the United Kingdom, United States, and Italy, as well as online webinars and retreats, making his teachings accessible to those seeking clarity, inner peace, and a direct encounter with the nature of consciousness.
