Ron Young

Ron Young Jr. grew up just outside of Atlanta in Lithia Springs, Georgia, and his dream of becoming a pilot began at an early age. Ron’s thrill for adventure and exploration is what initially led him to join the Boy Scouts, where he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. During his senior year of high school, Ron briefly left the United States to become an exchange student in Japan. Upon returning to the U.S. for college, his ever-growing desire for adventure eventually led him to become a whitewater river guide during the summer months. It was around this time that Ron learned about the Army’s need for Apache helicopter pilots, and he jumped at the opportunity. But this fateful decision would eventually lead to his involvement in the War on Terror.

Two days into the invasion of Iraq, he and copilot Chief Warrant Officer David Williams were shot down at night amidst heavy gunfire 50 miles southwest of Baghdad. The two Warrant Officers eluded the pursuant Iraqi soldiers for hours but were eventually pinned down only to be taken captive as prisoners of war. Twenty-three days later, Young, Williams, and five other POWs were rescued by brave Marines near Samarra, Iraq. “I was beyond words…. I felt like I had won the lottery of life,” Mr. Young said during an interview recounting the emotional rescue.

Ron shares his captivating story of dedication, courage, and adversity with audiences nationwide. He has also had the privilege of serving as a CNN special contributor, a White House political appointee, and a contestant on CBS’s "The Amazing Race." Mr. Young flew for more than twenty-five years before hanging up his wings to attend seminary at Liberty University and is currently pursuing a Master of Divinity.
