Rodney Robinson

Rodney Robinson is an educator and advocate for educational equity, known for his work with students often underserved by the traditional school system. After graduating from Virginia State University, Robinson began his career teaching social studies at Lucille M. Brown Middle School, later teaching at George Wythe High School and Armstrong High School. He chose to work at the Richmond Juvenile Detention Center after a report identified Virginia as leading the nation in students referred to law enforcement. At the Virgie Binford Education Center, located within the Richmond Juvenile Detention Center, Robinson taught social studies and history to students in grades 6 through 12.

Robinson developed a curriculum in collaboration with Pulitzer Prize-winning author James Forman Jr. at Yale University, focusing on juvenile justice and the prison system. His lessons encourage students to examine the circumstances leading to their incarceration and to understand pathways for moving forward. Robinson has contributed to the Yale Teacher's Institute, developing curricula on race, class, and punishment. His work emphasizes empowering students, many of whom have experienced trauma, to become civically engaged and to advocate for change in their schools and communities.

Robinson has received the R.E.B. Award for Teaching Excellence, was named Virginia Teacher of the Year, and was recognized as National Teacher of the Year. He has also been named HBCU Male Alumnus of the Year, ranked among the Top 100 Influential African Americans by The Root magazine, and recognized as Richmonder of the Year by Richmond Magazine and Richmond Times Dispatch.

During his tenure as National Teacher of the Year, Robinson advocated for economic and cultural equity in education, emphasizing the importance of diverse teachers and administrators. He serves as a senior policy advisor with Richmond Public Schools and is director of Teacher and Leader Pathways and RVA Men Teach, a program focused on recruiting and retaining male minority educators. Robinson partnered RVA Men Teach with the Virginia State University School of Education to launch the first paid HBCU teacher residency in the United States. He has served on the Google Edu Equity Board and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Future of Data Education Committee. Robinson’s career reflects his belief that every student deserves access to quality education and dedicated educators.
