Rex Chapman is a former NBA shooting guard known for his basketball career, personal challenges, and presence in sports media. In two years at the University of Kentucky, Chapman scored more than 1,000 points and led the Wildcats to a Sweet Sixteen appearance. The Charlotte Hornets selected Chapman with the eighth overall pick in the NBA Draft, making him the first player drafted by the franchise. In his rookie season, he was the youngest player in the league.
Chapman played 666 regular season NBA games, scoring 9,731 points for an average of 14.6 points per game, with 1,798 assists and 1,645 rebounds. He played for four NBA teams, including the Washington Bullets, Miami Heat, and Phoenix Suns. Known for his athleticism and long-range shooting, Chapman became a fan favorite in Phoenix, where he delivered one of the most memorable buzzer-beaters in league history. After retiring, he served as a color commentator on TNT and worked in NBA front offices, including as vice president of player personnel for the Phoenix Suns and Denver Nuggets.
Following routine surgery, Chapman developed an opioid addiction that escalated to taking up to 50 painkillers a day. The addiction led to a gambling problem that cost him nearly all of his NBA earnings, and after being arrested for shoplifting, Chapman entered rehab multiple times before achieving sobriety. He has spoken openly about these struggles, and his candor has become a cornerstone of his public identity. His autobiography, "It's Hard for Me to Live with Me," co-written with Seth Davis, covers Chapman's experiences with anxiety, depression, opioid and gambling addiction. The book became a New York Times bestseller.
With a basketball career spanning more than a decade, Chapman transitioned into media, amassing millions of followers. He served as the television presenter of the "Block or Charge" show on Adult Swim, based on his social media presence. Chapman also hosted a show on CNN+ titled "Rex Chapman." Leveraging his platform, he raised more than $150,000 to support those experiencing financial hardship. He has hosted the iHeart podcast "Charges with Rex Chapman" and the Smartless podcast "Owned." The podcast "Charges with Rex Chapman" is being adapted into a TV show, expanding his role as a commentator and public figure beyond basketball. Chapman's journey from athlete to addiction survivor to media personality provides a platform for discussing mental health, addiction recovery, and sports media with honesty and insight.
