Patricia Polacco

Patricia Polacco is a children's author and illustrator known for her extensive contributions to children's literature, having written and illustrated more than 115 books. Polacco frequently incorporates elements of her Russian, Ukrainian, Jewish, and Irish heritage into her stories, drawing on family history and personal experiences to create narratives that resonate with a broad audience. Her storytelling is rooted in the oral traditions passed down by her Ukrainian grandmother, whose tales inspired many of Polacco's works.

Polacco's journey to becoming a children's author was shaped by her experiences with dyslexia, which was diagnosed during her junior high school years. Despite challenges with reading, she found solace and expression through art. A pivotal moment in her education occurred when a teacher recognized her struggle and provided support, an experience Polacco recounts in her book "Thank You, Mr. Falker." Before entering the field of children's literature, Polacco earned advanced degrees in art history and worked as a restoration specialist in art museums, traveling and working internationally. She began her career as an author and illustrator after the age of 40.

Polacco's books address themes such as family heritage, cultural identity, social justice, and human connection. Notable titles include "The Keeping Quilt," which centers on a family heirloom, and "Pink and Say," a story about two boy soldiers during the American Civil War. "Pink and Say" received the American Book of the Year Award and was recognized by the Library of Congress and the President of the United States. Other works include "Junkyard Wonders," "The Blessing Cup," "Tucky Jo and Little Heart," "Because of Thursday," and her autobiography for children, "Firetalking."

Polacco has received numerous honors for her contributions to children's literature, including the Sydney Taylor Book Award, the International Reading Association Award, the Regina Medal from the Catholic Library Association, and the Golden Kite Award from the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. She has also been awarded honorary degrees in arts and letters and is recognized internationally as an advocate for children's rights.
