Nick Lowery Biography
Dominic Gerald Lowery is a Native American, former NFL placekicker whose exceptional career left a lasting mark on professional football. Known for both his precision and consistency, Lowery played for the New England Patriots, Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets, after a standout college career at Dartmouth. Lowery is Ojibwe (also known as Chippewa) and is a member of the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe Tribe and has served as their Chairman multiple times.
Lowery achieved elite status in the NFL, earning three Pro Bowl selections and retiring as the league’s all-time leader in both field goals made and field goal percentage. During his 14-season tenure with the Kansas City Chiefs, he became the franchise’s all-time leading scorer, amassing 1,466 points. As of 2018, he ranked 16th on the NFL’s all-time scoring list.
Raised in Washington, D.C., Lowery was a star athlete at St. Albans School before attending Dartmouth College. Off the field, he continued to set records—becoming the first professional athlete to earn a master’s degree in public administration from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.
In recognition of his contributions to the game and the Kansas City community, Lowery was inducted into the Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame in 2009. His legacy spans athletics, education and leadership, making him a notable figure in both sports and public service.
Nick had a "Kick with Nick" program for United Cerebral Palsy, the longest-running player fundraising program in NFL history. In 1993, he won the NFL Players Association's most prestigious award, the Byron R. "Whizzer" White Humanitarian Award. His "Adult Role Models for Youth" program has evolved into "Youth Friends" through the YMCA, connecting over 13,000 young people with 3,000 volunteers in the Greater Kansas City area.
Nick co-founded Native Vision in 1995, a program using professional athletes as high-impact mentors for Native American Youth. The program was recognized in 1997 on "Oprah" as the foremost program for Native youth.
Currently Nick runs the Nick Lowery Youth Foundation and continues to support youth development and voluntarism nationally.
