Nick Bontis

Dr. Nick Bontis is a Canadian academic, management consultant, and professional keynote speaker recognized for his expertise in intellectual capital. Bontis serves as Chair of Strategic Management at the DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University, where his research focuses on intellectual capital, knowledge management, organizational learning, knowledge worker productivity, human capital benchmarking, and structural equation modeling.

Bontis began his academic journey after a cover story in Fortune Magazine titled "Brainpower" inspired him to leave a banking career and pursue a PhD. His doctoral dissertation became the top-selling thesis in Canada.

Before academia, Bontis worked at Human Resources Development Canada and KPMG, later joining CIBC Securities Inc. in roles spanning marketing, securities analysis, recruitment, strategy, and software development. He received the CIBC Chairman's Award for outstanding contribution. Bontis earned his PhD from the Ivey Business School at Western University and has published over 140 academic articles in peer-reviewed journals, accumulating more than 50,000 citations. Google Scholar ranks Bontis as the most impactful researcher by citation count in the DeGroote School of Business and among the top 50 at McMaster University. He is ranked among the top 10 management researchers in Canada by Research.com and listed among the top 2 percent of scientists globally. Tom Stewart, former editor of Harvard Business Review and Fortune Magazine, has described Bontis as a pioneer in intellectual capital.

As an author, Bontis has published several books, including "Information Bombardment: Rising Above the Digital Onslaught." He has edited volumes such as "World Congress of Intellectual Capital Readings" and co-edited "The Strategic Management of Intellectual Capital and Organizational Knowledge" with Oxford University Press. Bontis is also Director of the Institute for Intellectual Capital Research, a management consulting firm and research think tank specializing in human capital diagnostic assessments for corporate and government clients. His consulting services have been utilized by organizations including the United Nations, Microsoft, Health Canada, Royal Bank, Telus, Accenture, SAS, Mitsubishi, United Way, the US Navy, and IBM.

Bontis is the first McMaster professor to win Outstanding Teacher of the Year and Faculty Researcher of the Year simultaneously and is a 3M National Teaching Fellow. The Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance recognized Bontis as the top university professor in the province, and Maclean's Magazine has rated him as McMaster University's most popular professor six times. As a speaker, Bontis has delivered more than 500 keynote presentations in 25 countries and has participated in over 328 published interviews, 201 radio interviews, and 455 TV interviews, establishing his influence in business strategy, knowledge management, and organizational learning.
