Mary Ellen Hannibal

Mary Ellen Hannibal is an environmental journalist and author whose work bridges science, literature, and conservation. Her career began as a New York magazine editor focused on literary topics before shifting to science and environmental reporting. Hannibal serves as a communicator between scientists and the general public, translating scientific concepts for general readers and often contextualizing them within art and literature.

Hannibal is the author of five books, including "The Spine of the Continent: The Race to Save America's Last, Best Wilderness," which explores the environmental significance of the Rocky Mountains from Waterton Lakes in Canada to Sonora in Mexico. The book details the development of conservation biology in the American West. "Citizen Scientist: Searching for Heroes and Hope in an Age of Extinction" traces the origins of the citizen science movement and was recognized as a best book of the year by the San Francisco Chronicle and received a Nautilus Book Award. Hannibal's interest in citizen science began during research for her book "Evidence of Evolution," when the extinction crisis became apparent through her interviews with scientists.

She is also the creator and writer of "Nature in the City," a spatio-temporal map of San Francisco that synthesizes more than 50 maps and tells stories of change over time. Hannibal has researched and written extensively about butterflies, weaving together themes of art, science, biography, history, landscape, and wildlife, including the life and work of Vladimir Nabokov, known for "Lolita" and his contributions as a lepidopterist and citizen scientist. She has delivered a TED Talk on butterflies and the human soul, connecting scientific inquiry with broader human themes.

Hannibal's awards and fellowships include the National Society of Science Writers' Science and Society Award, Stanford University's Knight-Risser Prize for Western Environmental Journalism, an Alicia Patterson Foundation Fellowship, and a Stanford University Media Fellowship. In addition to her books, she writes for Bay Nature, The San Francisco Chronicle, The New York Times, Nautilus, Science, Anthropocene, and other publications. Hannibal is an adjunct professor at California College of the Arts in the Design Graduate Program. She serves on the board of the San Francisco Botanical Garden and is involved with organizations such as Stanford University's Jasper Ridge Biological Reserve, Voices for Biodiversity, the American Geophysical Union, and the Wildlands Network's Rewilding Leadership Council. Through her writing, teaching, and advocacy, Hannibal contributes to the fields of environmental journalism, conservation, and science communication.
