He studied finance and information technology at the University of Cape Town before founding Thawte, a company specializing in digital certificates and internet security. Thawte’s success culminated in its sale to VeriSign in 1999 for $575 million, making Shuttleworth one of South Africa’s first internet billionaires and setting the stage for his future ventures in technology and philanthropy.

Following the sale of Thawte, Shuttleworth established the Shuttleworth Foundation, dedicated to advancing education, innovation, and social development across South Africa.
