Laurie Keller is an American children's book author and illustrator known for her humor, visual storytelling, and contributions to children's literature. Keller earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Kendall College of Art and Design before working as a greeting card illustrator at Hallmark Cards in Kansas City for seven years. During her time at Hallmark, she designed entire cards, which inspired her to consider writing and illustrating books.
Keller's debut book, "The Scrambled States of America," originated from an idea that led her to pursue publishing in New York City. The book explores what happens when the 50 United States grow tired of staying in their places and begin to wander around the map. Publishers Weekly praised Keller for giving each state a unique personality and for delivering geography lessons through clever dialogue. The success of this book launched her career in children's publishing.
In addition to her books, Keller created illustrations for Nickelodeon and directed six network IDs for the channel with Pitch Productions, utilizing pipe-cleaners and cel animation. Her bibliography includes "Open Wide: Tooth School Inside," "Arnie the Doughnut," "Grandpa Gazillion's Number Yard," "Do Unto Otters," and "The Scrambled States of America Talent Show."
"Do Unto Otters: A Book About Manners" was recognized as Amazon's No. 1 Editors' Pick on their Best Books list. The book introduces the "Golden Rule" through the characters of Mr. Rabbit and his new neighbors, the Otters, demonstrating the importance of manners and kindness. "Arnie the Doughnut" was named a Bank Street Best Children's Book of the Year and was adapted into a DVD narrated by Michael McKean. Keller expanded the doughnut character's adventures into a chapter book series, which has been noted for its appeal to hesitant readers through comedic storytelling.
Keller contributed to Mo Willems' "Elephant and Piggie Like Reading!" series with the book "We Are Growing!," which received the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award, honoring distinguished American books for beginning readers. Her additional works, including "Potato Pants!" and "Wake Me Up in 20 Coconuts!," continue to highlight her inventive style and use of vibrant visuals and dialogue.
Keller is also active in promoting literacy and creativity among children, frequently conducting school visits and encouraging young people to pursue writing and illustration. She resides in the woods along the shores of Lake Michigan, where she continues to create stories that engage children and foster learning.
