Jose Altuve

José Altuve is a Venezuelan professional baseball second baseman for the Houston Astros of Major League Baseball and one of the most accomplished players of his generation. Born May 6, 1990, in Maracay, Venezuela, Altuve signed with Houston as an amateur free agent in 2007 and made his major league debut on July 20, 2011. Over more than a decade with the Astros, he has become the face of the franchise and one of the most productive second basemen in modern baseball history.

Altuve’s breakout came during the Astros’ rise to contention in the mid-2010s. In 2017, he captured the American League Most Valuable Player Award and helped lead Houston to its first World Series championship. He later added a second championship in 2022, further cementing his postseason legacy. Known for his consistency at the plate, Altuve is a multiple-time All-Star and has won seven Silver Slugger Awards, three American League batting titles, a Gold Glove Award, and a Hank Aaron Award. His combination of contact hitting, power, and speed has placed him among an elite group of players with more than 2,000 career hits, over 200 home runs, and 300 stolen bases.

Throughout his career, Altuve has ranked among the Astros’ all-time leaders in hits, runs scored, and postseason home runs. In February 2024, he signed a five-year, $125 million contract extension to remain in Houston through the 2029 season, underscoring his enduring value to the organization. Respected for his leadership, work ethic, and competitive drive, Altuve continues to serve as a cornerstone of the Astros and a symbol of sustained excellence in Major League Baseball.
