Jenifer Lewis

Jenifer Lewis is an actress, singer, author, and activist whose career in Hollywood spans more than four decades, with over 300 appearances in film and television. Lewis began her professional journey on Broadway shortly after graduating from Webster University, making her debut in the musical "Eubie!" She later performed as a backup vocalist for Bette Midler and appeared in numerous televised specials. Lewis played Effie White in the workshop production of "Dreamgirls," directed by Michael Bennett, and established herself in the theater world before transitioning to screen roles.

In film and television, Lewis is recognized for her performances as Tina Turner's mother in "What's Love Got to Do With It," and as the mother of Whitney Houston's character in "The Preacher's Wife." She appeared in "Hereafter" opposite Matt Damon and worked with director Tyler Perry in "Madea's Family Reunion" and "Meet the Browns." Lewis has contributed voice work as Mama Odie in Disney's "The Princess and the Frog" and as Flo in Pixar's "Cars" series. Her portrayal of Ruby Johnson on the ABC series "Black-ish" earned her a nomination for the Critics Choice Award and reinforced her reputation as a prominent figure in African-American television and film.

Lewis is also known for her live performances, including a concert at Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops orchestra and more than 200 concerts across 49 states and four continents. She authored the memoir "The Mother of Black Hollywood," which details her life and career, and has received honors such as the Black Reel Award for Television and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the NAACP. Lewis was recognized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

In addition to her entertainment career, Lewis is an advocate for mental health awareness. She has spoken publicly about her diagnosis with bipolar disorder and her commitment to mental health advocacy, particularly within the Black community. Her second book, "Walking in My Joy," explores her personal journey toward healing. Lewis continues to use her platform to address important issues and engage audiences through her work in acting, music, writing, and activism.
