Jeffrey Rayport

Jeffrey F. Rayport is a Senior Lecturer of Business Administration in Entrepreneurial Management at Harvard Business School. Rayport is recognized for his expertise in digital marketing, online media, e-commerce, and business strategy. His research centers on growth-stage technology ventures and scaling strategies, with a focus on the applications of digital technologies in marketing, information, and services businesses. Rayport is known for his work in information-intensive industries, including media and entertainment, retail, and financial services.

Rayport developed and taught the first graduate-level e-commerce course in the United States at Harvard Business School, titled "Managing Marketspace Businesses." The course enrolled nearly 1,000 MBA students, and in developing it, Rayport authored more than 100 case studies, articles, and notes. Business plans from his course contributed to the founding of several start-ups, including Yahoo. His Fast Company article, "The Virus of Marketing," introduced the concept and term "viral marketing." Rayport was recognized as Outstanding Professor by the Harvard Business School Students Association for three consecutive years.

In addition to his academic work, Rayport has served as founder and CEO of Marketspace LLC, a digital advisory firm, and co-founder of Monitor Executive Development, a custom executive education business. He was a senior partner at Monitor Deloitte and an operating partner at Castanea Partners, a private equity firm focused on retail and consumer brands. Rayport also co-founded several corporate universities, including those at Omnicom Group, Bertelsmann AG, and Amgen. He has founded three companies and served on nearly 20 public and private corporate boards.

Rayport is the author of several graduate-level textbooks on strategy in the networked economy published by McGraw-Hill, as well as a trade book with Harvard Business Review Press on reinventing service businesses in the digital age. His writing has appeared in Harvard Business Review, Bloomberg BusinessWeek, CIO, Financial Times, Fast Company, Forbes.com, CBS MarketWatch, McKinsey Quarterly, Strategy & Business, and MIT Technology Review. His Harvard Business Review article, "The Overlooked Key to a Successful Scale-Up," addresses challenges in scaling technology ventures.
