Harvey Silver

Dr. Harvey F. Silver is an educator, author, and professional development leader whose work has influenced instructional practice in schools throughout the United States and internationally. As president of Silver Strong & Associates and Thoughtful Education Press, Silver has been recognized among the 100 most influential teachers in the country. He holds an EdD and has more than four decades of experience as an educator, presenter, coach, and consultant. Silver completed his graduate studies at Columbia University Teachers College.

In collaboration with the late Richard W. Strong, Silver developed The Thoughtful Classroom, a professional development initiative focused on prioritizing student engagement alongside educational standards. He later worked with Matthew J. Perini to create the Thoughtful Classroom Teacher Effectiveness Framework, a system for observing, evaluating, and refining classroom practice that is implemented in school districts nationwide. Silver's work centers on educator effectiveness, instructional strategies, lesson and unit design, differentiated instruction and assessment, and thinking and learning styles.

Silver is the author of several articles and books on instructional strategies, including ASCD bestsellers "The Core Six," "The Strategic Teacher," "So Each May Learn," and "Teaching What Matters Most." He is also the lead developer of the "Tools for Today's Educators" series, which includes titles such as "Tools for a Successful School Year (Starting on Day One)," "Tools for Thoughtful Assessment," "Tools for Conquering the Common Core," and a collaborative publication with McREL International, "Tools for Classroom Instruction That Works." His publication "Teaching for Deeper Learning" is a collaboration with Jay McTighe.

Silver has served as principal consultant for the Georgia Critical Thinking Skills Program and the Kentucky Thoughtful Education Teacher Leadership Program. His book "Tools for Thoughtful Assessment" received an Independent Publisher Book Award and a Learning Magazine Teachers' Choice Award for Professional Development. Silver and his collaborators also produced "Tools for Promoting Active, In-Depth Learning," which earned a Teachers' Choice Award.

Silver presents regularly at national and regional education conferences, including events hosted by ASCD, Learning Forward, ESEA (National Title I), Learning & the Brain, Battelle for Kids, and Hawker Brownlow Education in Australia. He has led workshops, institutes, and academies for schools, districts, and state education organizations across the United States, focusing on research-based techniques for improving classroom instruction, educator professional development, and effective teaching strategies.
