Hakeem Olajuwon

Hakeem Olajuwon is widely regarded as one of the greatest centers in basketball history, celebrated for his graceful footwork, defensive dominance, and signature “Dream Shake” move that transformed post play in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Olajuwon initially focused on soccer before discovering basketball as a teenager. His athleticism, agility, and coordination from years on the soccer field helped shape the unique style that later made him one of the most skilled big men the game had ever seen.

Olajuwon moved to the United States to attend the University of Houston, where he became part of the famed “Phi Slama Jama” teams alongside stars like Clyde Drexler. Under coach Guy Lewis, Houston reached three consecutive Final Fours in the early 1980s, helping elevate college basketball’s national popularity. Olajuwon’s dominance as a shot blocker and rebounder, combined with his emerging offensive skill set, made him one of the most coveted prospects in the country.

In 1984, the Houston Rockets selected Olajuwon with the first overall pick in what is often considered the greatest draft class in NBA history, ahead of legends such as Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, and John Stockton. Over an 18-year NBA career, Olajuwon became the cornerstone of the Rockets franchise, leading the team to back-to-back NBA championships in 1994 and 1995. During the 1993–94 season, he achieved one of the rarest accomplishments in sports history by winning NBA Most Valuable Player, Defensive Player of the Year, and Finals MVP in the same season.

Known equally for finesse and intensity, Olajuwon revolutionized the center position. His “Dream Shake” became one of basketball’s most iconic moves, blending footwork, balance, and deception in ways that influenced generations of players. Defensively, he remains the NBA’s all-time leader in blocked shots and ranks among the greatest defenders ever to play the game. Throughout his career, he earned 12 All-Star selections, multiple All-NBA honors, and widespread respect for his professionalism and humility.

Off the court, Olajuwon embraced his Muslim faith and became known for his discipline, philanthropy, and mentorship. After retiring in 2002, he transitioned into business and real estate while also becoming a highly sought-after trainer for NBA stars eager to learn post moves and footwork from a master technician. In 2008, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
