The Collaboratory collaborates across Microsoft Research, various divisions of the company, academic institutions such as Harvard, industry partners like Protocol Labs, and civil society organizations including the Collective Intelligence Project. Weyl was also part of the leadership team in Microsoft's Office of the CTO, where he contributed to the company's relationship with OpenAI. He teaches a course at Yale University titled "Designing the Digital Economy," which integrates economics and computer science, reflecting the interdisciplinary approach of digital economists in the technology sector.
Weyl's work has influenced discussions at the intersection of economics, technology, and governance. He contributed to the development of quadratic voting, a collective decision-making procedure, and quadratic funding, a method for democratically allocating resources. Weyl co-authored "Radical Markets: Uprooting Capitalism and Democracy for a Just Society," which was named Economist Book of the Year, and co-wrote "Decentralized Society: Finding Web3's Soul," a widely downloaded paper on SSRN. He was the first author of the open-source, democratically governed book "⿻ 數位 Plurality: The Future of Collaborative Technology and Democracy" and executive-produced the short documentary "Good Enough Ancestor." Weyl has published numerous scholarly and popular articles in journals and outlets including Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, American Economic Review, Harvard Law Review, and New York Times.
Outside of Microsoft, Weyl co-founded and chairs the Plurality Institute, founded the RadicalxChange Foundation, and co-founded and co-chairs the Faith, Family and Technology Network. He has collaborated with technologists such as Audrey Tang, Jaron Lanier, and Vitalik Buterin. Weyl has pioneered new economic models, open standards, and systems for funding and voting to enhance public goods provision, with organizations and governments worldwide adopting his concepts to improve decision-making processes.
Weyl has been recognized as one of blockchain's most influential figures by CoinDesk and as a leading visionary in technology by WIRED and Bloomberg Businessweek. He was the first technologist to receive the International Religious Freedom Secretariat Peacebuilder Award and received the Tapia Award for Scientific Achievement, Civic Science and Diversifying Computing. Weyl's work continues to challenge established perspectives on markets, democracy, and the role of technology in fostering equitable and cooperative societies.
