Dr. Marcus Bright

Dr. Marcus Bright is a scholar, author, and social impact leader whose career centers on expanding access, equity, and opportunity for diverse and historically marginalized communities. As a former college athlete, university professor, government administrator, foundation executive, and community change agent, Bright has nearly two decades of experience collaborating with institutions, organizations, and communities to create partnerships and implement processes that foster access, opportunities, and resources for socioeconomic mobility. He holds a bachelor's degree in government and world affairs from University of Tampa, a master's degree in public administration from Florida International University, and a doctorate in public administration from Florida Atlantic University.

Bright's professional experience spans the public, academic, and nonprofit sectors. He has taught public administration at Florida International University, Lynn University, City University of New York Medgar Evers College, Florida Atlantic University, and University of Massachusetts Amherst. He served as executive director of Education for a Better America, a nonprofit organization that partnered with school districts, universities, churches, and community organizations in more than 15 cities nationwide to conduct educational programming and enhance public policy engagement. Bright also served as district administrator for the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project, a school-based dropout prevention and mentorship program serving thousands of boys, and has held administrative roles at Florida International University, City University of New York Medgar Evers College, Miami-Dade County Economic Advocacy Trust, and the Miami-Dade County Public Schools Office of Educational Equity, Access, and Diversity.

Bright is a writer and media contributor, with published commentary in outlets including Huffington Post, The Grio, and Miami Herald, and is a regular contributor to Diverse: Issues in Higher Education. He has hosted a television show nominated for a Regional Emmy Award and has spoken nationally on topics related to public policy, education, and social justice. Bright has served as vice president of higher education for Renaissance Search & Consulting and as senior advisor for the Rising Coaches Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Alliance, one of the largest organized groups of basketball coaches globally, where he helped lead an Equality and Inclusion Campaign across college basketball that included partnerships with more than 150 colleges and universities.

Bright is the author of several books. His work, "Brighter Ways Forward: Reflections on Sports, Tech, and Socioeconomic Mobility," explores issues relevant to upward mobility, particularly for those from historically marginalized communities. The book discusses how communities identify young people with athletic talent early and create opportunities for their development, suggesting similar approaches can be used to build pipelines to computer science and technology careers. His follow-up, "Bridges to a Brighter Future: Fulfilling Our Purpose and Transforming Our Society," addresses systemic barriers that perpetuate inequality and offers structural solutions, envisioning a society with equitable access to quality education and economic opportunities. Through his books, speaking engagements, and extensive work in education, technology, sports, and social change, Bright is recognized for his expertise at the intersection of these fields.
