Danielle Green Biography
Danielle Green is a former Notre Dame basketball standout who lost her lower left arm and hand when she was wounded by a rocket-propelled enemy grenade while serving with the U.S. Army in the Iraq war. As she rebuilt her own life, she put her experience to work as a readjustment counselor for the Department of Veterans Affairs, helping fellow service vets cope with the physical and psychological trauma they encountered on the battlefield. Her path led her to the Wounded Warrior Project, where she is a Warrior Speaks spokesperson, raising awareness for the needs of injured military service members and their families through speaking opportunities.
A disadvantaged teen who grew up on the streets of Chicago’s South Side, the strong-willed Green earned a scholarship to Notre Dame, where she averaged 9.5 points and 4.5 rebounds on the court and became the 17th-leading scorer in program history. She graduated with a degree in psychology and returned to Chicago to teach grammar school, help coach a high school girls’ basketball team, and take some graduate-level education courses before joining the army as a military police officer and being deployed to Iraq.
