Chris Arnade

Chris Arnade is an American photographer, writer, and social documentarian known for his transition from Wall Street trader to chronicler of overlooked communities in the United States. Arnade holds a doctorate in particle physics from Johns Hopkins University and spent two decades as a bond trader, working as a quantitative analyst and using mathematical models in finance. His experiences during the financial crisis and subsequent government bailout prompted him to reevaluate his career and values.

Arnade began volunteering in the Hunts Point neighborhood of the South Bronx, where he documented the lives of individuals affected by poverty and addiction. His photography series, "Faces of Addiction," highlights the experiences of people living with substance use disorders in this community. This project led Arnade to travel across the country, interviewing and photographing individuals in poor and working-class communities often overlooked by mainstream media.

His work has appeared in publications including the New York Times, The Atlantic, The Guardian, The Washington Post, Financial Times, and Wall Street Journal. Arnade's book, "Dignity," presents photo essays and personal stories that explore themes of inequality, addiction, and poverty in America. The book examines the lives of those he refers to as "Back Row America," individuals who lack the credentials and advantages of the meritocratic upper class.

In addition to his work on addiction and poverty, Arnade has interviewed a wide range of Americans, including political supporters and sex workers. He has appeared on C-SPAN, BBC, PBS's "Amanpour and Company," and discussed his work on the economics podcast EconTalk. Critics have compared his approach to that of George Orwell, noting his immersive style and attention to detail. Arnade's background in quantitative finance, academic science, and documentary photography informs his perspective on social inequality, class, and the search for dignity in contemporary America.
