Chade-Meng Tan

Chade-Meng Tan is an engineer, international bestselling author, and philanthropist recognized for his work in mindfulness and emotional intelligence in the technology industry. Tan was Google employee number 107, where his official job title was Jolly Good Fellow. Among his contributions, he helped build Google's first mobile search service and led the team responsible for monitoring search quality, while also focusing on initiatives to promote mindfulness and well-being within the company. He retired from Google as Jolly Good Fellow at age 45.

Tan is known for developing a mindfulness-based emotional intelligence course at Google called "Search Inside Yourself," which was featured on the front page of the Sunday Business section of the New York Times. The course inspired his New York Times bestselling book, "Search Inside Yourself," which has received endorsements from global leaders in government, business, and spirituality. His subsequent book, "Joy on Demand," explores techniques for cultivating joy and discusses its importance for creativity, innovation, and success in professional and personal contexts.

Tan co-founded the Search Inside Yourself Leadership Institute and serves as co-chair of One Billion Acts of Peace, an initiative nominated multiple times for the Nobel Peace Prize. He is also the founder and president of the Tan Teo Charitable Foundation, which supports peace and enlightenment initiatives, and a founding patron of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at Stanford University.

Tan has delivered talks on compassion and mindfulness at venues including the United Nations, the White House, and the Vatican. His TED talk, "Everyday Compassion at Google," discusses the integration of compassion into business practices and innovation. He is co-founder of Buddhism.net and served as executive producer of the film "Walk With Me," which focuses on Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. Tan is also an adjunct professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore. He is known for combining engineering expertise with a commitment to mindfulness, compassion, and emotional intelligence in leadership and organizational development.
