Dr. Carolyn Porco is a planetary scientist known for her extensive work in planetary exploration and astronomy, particularly in the study of the outer solar system. Porco earned her doctorate from the California Institute of Technology in the Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences, focusing her dissertation on Voyager discoveries related to Saturn's rings. As a graduate student, she analyzed data from Voyager 1, contributing to the understanding of Saturn's ringlets and magnetic field.
After joining the Department of Planetary Sciences at the University of Arizona, Porco became a member of the Voyager Imaging Team. She participated in the Voyager encounters with Uranus and Neptune, leading the Rings Working Group during the Neptune encounter.
Porco was selected to lead the Imaging Team for the Cassini-Huygens mission, an international project that placed a spacecraft in orbit around Saturn and deployed the Huygens probe to Titan. She contributed to the design of the mission's advanced camera system, which included 200- and 2,000-millimeter lenses capable of capturing black and white, color, infrared, and ultraviolet images. The Cassini mission produced nearly 500,000 images, enabling Porco and her team to make significant discoveries, including the identification of seven Saturnian moons: Methone, Pallene, Polydeuces, Daphnis, Anthe, Aegaeon, and a small moonlet in the outer B ring.
Among the mission's discoveries, Porco's team was responsible for the first observation of plumes erupting from Enceladus, Saturn's sixth largest moon, and suggested that these jets originated from reservoirs of near-surface liquid water beneath the moon's south pole. Cassini findings indicated the presence of a long-lived, subsurface, salty, organics-rich global ocean, particularly beneath the south polar terrain, making Enceladus a key site for astrobiology and the search for extraterrestrial habitable zones. Porco also collaborated with Mark Marley to predict that acoustic occultation within Saturn could produce specific wave features in the planet's rings, a prediction later confirmed by Cassini data. This work demonstrated that planetary rings can serve as a seismograph, enhancing knowledge of a planet's internal structure.
In addition to her research, Porco is recognized for her science communication efforts. She created "The Day The Earth Smiled," an event during which Cassini imaged Saturn, its rings, and Earth, inviting the public to reflect on humanity's place in the cosmos. Porco has served as a science consultant for productions including the movie "Contact," the film "Star Trek," and the documentary "The Farthest: Voyager in Space." She is a frequent public speaker, having delivered lectures at TED and the opening speech for Pangea Day, where she discussed the cosmic context of human existence.
Porco has co-authored more than 125 scientific papers in astronomy and planetary science and is a regular commentator on topics such as planetary exploration, astronomy, and the intersection of science and religion. Her honors include the Carl Sagan Medal for Excellence in the Communication of Science to the Public from the American Astronomical Society's Division for Planetary Sciences and the Distinguished Alumni Award from the California Institute of Technology. Asteroid (7231) Porco was named in recognition of her contributions to planetary ring systems and spacecraft exploration of the outer solar system. Porco has served as a visiting distinguished scholar at the University of California at Berkeley and as a fellow of the California Academy of Sciences.
