Byron D. Brooks, M.A., is a speaker, anti-racist activist, educator, and social entrepreneur whose life story includes overcoming significant adversity. Born in prison and experiencing homelessness for two years at the start of his collegiate journey, Brooks has focused his career on challenging stereotypes and addressing systemic barriers.
Brooks earned an associate degree from Henry Ford College, a bachelor's degree from Ferris State University, and a graduate degree from the University of Michigan, where his master of arts concentrated on diversity and social justice in higher education. He shares his experiences and insights in his book, "But God: A Story of Struggle, Faith and Perseverance."
As an educator, Brooks has contributed to anti-racist and social justice education and curriculum development in Michigan, including at the University of Michigan, where he developed leadership and student engagement curricula. His professional roles have included Community Engagement Coordinator, Anti-Racist Program Facilitator and Instructor at the University of Michigan, and Assistant Director of Residential Life at the College of Wooster. Brooks later joined the Afro-American Cultural Center at Yale University as Assistant Director. He also has experience as a teacher, professor, and is a licensed minister.
In his role as Chief Hood Officer at Hood Black & Educated Consulting Group, Brooks advises institutions, nonprofits, and organizations on creating sustainable and equitable environments, drawing on expertise in public policy and sociology. His work is informed by the ideals of "The Talented Tenth," publicized by Dr. Du Bois, and the philosophy of Ubuntu, which emphasizes collective well-being.
Brooks is the founder of From the Hood For the Hood, a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing homelessness and promoting community engagement in Michigan and across the country. His lived experience with homelessness inspired the creation of the nonprofit, which has led to leadership roles in national service initiatives and recognition with the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award.
Brooks is a keynote speaker on topics including Black heritage, civil rights, DEI, diversity and inclusion, empowerment, personal growth, social activism, and social justice. His personal testimony—from being born in prison and raised by his great-grandparents to becoming the first Black student body president of Henry Ford College and a licensed minister—provides a foundation for his work in higher education, community engagement, and advocacy for equity and inclusion.
