Brooke Siem

Brooke Siem is a chef, author, speaker, and advocate whose work focuses on the intersection of culinary arts and mental health reform. Siem co-founded Prohibition Bakery in New York City and was recognized as one of Zagat's 30 Under 30. She earned the title of Food Network "Chopped" Champion and co-authored the cookbook "Prohibition Bakery," which was a finalist for the Gourmand Award. Siem has worked as a private chef for high-profile clients and has contributed to research and development for consumer packaged goods startups.

Siem was among the first generation of teenagers prescribed antidepressants and spent half her life on psychiatric medication following her father's death. After deciding to discontinue these medications, she documented her experience with antidepressant withdrawal and the challenges of navigating the mental health system. Her memoir, "May Cause Side Effects," is recognized as the first mass-market book on antidepressant withdrawal and was named one of Good Morning America's Most Anticipated Reads. The memoir also received the BIBA Prize for memoir. Siem's work on antidepressant withdrawal and mental health has appeared in The Washington Post, The New York Post, Psychology Today, Insider, and Mad In America. Her newsletter, "Happiness Is a Skill," focuses on antidepressant withdrawal education, depression recovery, and building happiness as a skill.

Siem is among the first public voices to address the long-term effects of medicating children with psychiatric drugs. As a keynote speaker, she shares her personal experience and culinary background to inform audiences about mental health, antidepressant withdrawal, and safe de-prescribing practices.
