Robert Meyer Biography

Robert Meyer is the Frederick H. Ecker/MetLife Insurance Professor of Marketing at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he serves as co-director of Wharton Human-AI Research. Meyer's scholarly work focuses on consumer decision-making, behavioral economics, marketing research methods, and responses to new technologies and artificial intelligence. He joined the Wharton marketing faculty after positions at the Anderson Graduate School of Management at UCLA and the Graduate School of Industrial Administration at Carnegie Mellon University.

Meyer's research has been published in professional journals and books, including Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Risk and Uncertainty, Marketing Science, Management Science, and Risk Analysis. He is a former editor of Journal of Marketing Research and Marketing Letters, and has served as an associate editor for Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing, and Marketing Science. His academic honors include the Frank Bass Award for best article based on a doctoral dissertation and the John D.C. Little Award for best paper in an INFORMS journal. Meyer has also served as chair of Wharton's Marketing Department and vice dean of its doctoral programs.

Meyer is co-author of the book "The Ostrich Paradox: Why We Underprepare for Disasters," written with Howard Kunreuther. The book explores why individuals and communities often fail to prepare for natural catastrophes, despite advances in risk forecasting and mitigation. As co-director of Wharton's Risk Management and Decision Processes Center, Meyer has researched how people decide to invest in protection against low-probability, high-consequence events such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and financial losses. His work demonstrates that failures of preparation preceding events like Hurricane Katrina, Sandy, and the housing and equities collapse are consistent with cognitive biases in risk perception.

Meyer's research also examines biases in consumer communication, including the use of natural-language processing tools to study the development and spread of sensationalist news stories on social media, and how warning messages are perceived during natural disaster threats. He has led Wharton webinars on artificial intelligence and its impact on learning and decision-making, reflecting his focus on the intersection of human behavior, risk management, and emerging technology. Meyer's work provides insights for policymakers, business leaders, and the public on risk, decision-making, and the evolving role of AI in society.
