Zackery Rago

Zackery Rago is a marine ecologist, underwater photographer, and ocean conservation advocate recognized for his role in the Netflix documentary "Chasing Coral." Initially hired as a camera technician for the Boulder-based company View Into The Blue, Rago contributed to the design and deployment of underwater time-lapse camera systems featured in the film. His expertise and commitment to coral reef conservation led to an on-screen presence as he joined the film crew in documenting a significant coral bleaching event, during which 75 percent of corals were affected by heat stress linked to climate change.

Rago holds a bachelor's degree in evolutionary biology and ecology from the University of Colorado at Boulder. His background includes four years in the marine aquarium industry and extensive fieldwork as a certified scuba diver. Rago's knowledge of coral taxonomy and reef ecology enabled him to interpret and communicate the ecological impact observed during 40 days of filming at the Great Barrier Reef off Lizard Island with director Jeff Orlowski. He also collaborated with Dr. Charlie Veron, a leading coral researcher. "Chasing Coral" premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it received the Audience Award, and was later distributed globally on Netflix.

Rago has served as director of science and education for Teens4Oceans, focusing on marine science education and youth engagement in ocean conservation. He has pursued doctoral research at the Hawai'i Institute of Marine Biology at the University of Hawai'i, with interests in marine conservation technology, coral reef ecology, and the effects of climate change on coral reefs. As a public speaker, Rago addresses audiences on the importance of marine ecosystems and the urgent need for ocean conservation.
