Yusra Mardini

Yusra Mardini, born in Syria, served as a torchbearer for the refugee community by becoming a part of the inaugural Refugee Olympic Athletes Team. She showcased her athletic prowess at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Mardini's talent was evident when she won her heat in the 100-meter butterfly event during the Rio Olympics, and she carried the flag for the Refugee Olympic Team at the Tokyo Olympics. Her involvement in these games not only highlighted her skills but also shone a light on the experiences of refugees worldwide.

In 2017, Mardini was recognized as a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, a position that allowed her to further advocate for the refugee community. This advocacy was acknowledged by Time magazine, which included her in their list of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2023. She moved to Los Angeles in 2022 to study Cinema and Visual Arts at the University of Southern California, a move that expanded her influence from sports to the arts and media.

Mardini's journey from being a refugee to an Olympian and advocate is captured in her autobiography "Butterfly: From Refugee to Olympian - My Story of Rescue, Hope, and Triumph," published in 2018. Her life was also portrayed in the biographical film "The Swimmers," released on Netflix in November 2022. She extended her reach to the fashion industry, featuring in campaigns for brands like Under Armour and gracing Milan Fashion Week. In 2023, she founded the Yusra Mardini Foundation to further support sports and education for refugee communities, solidifying her commitment to elevating the lives of those in similar situations to her own.
