Yoko Ono

Yoko Ono is a Japanese multimedia artist, musician, and peace activist recognized for her contributions to conceptual art, performance art, and experimental music. Classically trained in piano and voice, Ono was the first woman admitted to the philosophy program at Gakushūin University in Tokyo and later attended Sarah Lawrence College. In the 1960s, Ono became a member of the Fluxus artist group, where she developed an art practice centered on audience participation and instruction-based works. Prior to her partnership with John Lennon, Ono was known as the High Priestess of the Happening and a pioneer in performance art.

Ono's early works challenged the traditional relationship between artist and audience. In "Painting to Be Stepped On," she invited viewers to walk on a canvas, questioning the boundaries between art and life. Her performance piece "Cut Piece" is regarded as a landmark in feminist art. Ono's book, "Grapefruit," a collection of conceptual instruction pieces, influenced Lennon, who credited the lyric and concept of "Imagine" to her work. Ono later received a songwriting credit for "Imagine" from the National Music Publishers Association.

Ono has produced more than 30 albums and has been active in peace activism, including the "Bed-Ins for Peace" with Lennon. As a singer and songwriter, she has released 13 solo studio albums and nine collaborative albums, including "Double Fantasy," which received the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Ono became the oldest artist to achieve a number-one hit on the dance charts with "Move on Fast." She also created the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER on Videy, an island near Reykjavik, Iceland, as a permanent symbol of her and Lennon's commitment to world peace.

Ono has contributed to numerous arts and humanitarian causes, establishing awards such as the Courage Awards for the Arts and the LennonOno Grant for Peace. She has received honors including the NME Inspiration Award, the Dr. Rainer Hildebrandt Medal: International Human Rights Award, the Venice Biennale Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, and multiple Grammy Awards. MacDowell awarded her the Edward MacDowell Medal for lifetime achievement.

The retrospective "Music of the Mind" showcases more than 200 works from Ono's career, spanning early avant-garde pieces to large-scale installations. The exhibition, featuring works such as "Imagine Peace" and "Peace Is Power," has been presented at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and The Broad in Los Angeles. Throughout her career, Ono's work as an artist and activist has continued to challenge the boundaries between artist and audience, maintaining relevance in the fields of conceptual art, performance art, and peace activism.
