Yanni, born Yiannis Chryssomallis in Kalamata, Greece, is a self-taught composer, pianist, keyboardist, and music producer known for his contributions to instrumental music, new age, and world music. Yanni developed a unique musical shorthand as a child, blending jazz, classical, soft rock, and world music to create predominantly instrumental works. He began playing piano at age six, choosing to learn at his own pace rather than through formal training. Before pursuing music professionally, Yanni was a member of the Greek national swimming team and broke the national freestyle record at age 14. He later attended the University of Minnesota, graduating with a degree in psychology. After graduation, Yanni founded the rock band Chameleon and launched his solo recording career with the instrumental album "Optimystique."
Yanni's career in the music industry includes a significant milestone with the production of "Live at the Acropolis." He invested $2 million of his personal funds into the project, which was broadcast on PBS and became one of the network's most popular programs, reaching audiences in 65 countries and selling more than 7 million copies worldwide. The concert video became the second best-selling music concert video of all time, following Michael Jackson's "Thriller." His albums "Reflections of Passion," "Dare to Dream," and "In My Time" achieved commercial success, with the latter two earning Grammy Award nominations. At least 16 of his albums have reached No. 1 on Billboard's "Top New Age Album" chart.
Following "Live at the Acropolis," Yanni staged concerts at iconic venues such as the Taj Mahal in India and the Forbidden City in Beijing, China, becoming one of the first Western artists permitted to perform at these historic sites. These performances led to the live album and video "Tribute." Additional concert locations have included the Burj Khalifa in the United Arab Emirates, the Kremlin in Russia, El Morro castle in Puerto Rico, the ancient city of Byblos in Lebanon, and the Roman Theatre of Carthage in Tunisia. Yanni and Celine Dion were also among the first non-Chinese artists invited to perform separately at the CCTV Spring Festival Gala in China, a televised event with an audience of 700 million.
After a period of extensive touring and breakthrough concerts, Yanni took a two-year hiatus from music, citing stress and depression. During this time, he traveled extensively, experiences that influenced the cultural integration found in his subsequent albums "If I Could Tell You" and "Ethnicity." His album "Inspirato" features operatic vocals and collaborations with artists such as Plácido Domingo and Renée Fleming. Yanni's autobiography, "Yanni in Words," co-authored with David Rensin, became a New York Times bestseller.
Yanni is recognized as a leading figure in contemporary instrumental and new age music, with more than 500 million people in over 140 countries having attended his live performances. He popularized the use of electronic music synthesizers alongside full-scale symphony orchestras. His compositions have been featured in television and major sporting events, including the Super Bowl, U.S. Open, Tour de France, World Figure Skating Championships, and the Olympics. Yanni has raised over $13 million for PBS through fundraising concerts and has supported conservation efforts with the World Wildlife Fund. His career demonstrates the global and cross-genre appeal of instrumental music.
