William Nordhaus

William D. Nordhaus is an economist and Sterling Professor of Economics at Yale University, recognized for his foundational work in climate-change economics. Nordhaus, together with Paul Romer, received the Nobel Prize for Economics for contributions to the study of long-term economic growth and its relationship to climate change. He has been affiliated with Yale University for decades and has participated in the Brookings Panel on Economic Activity for much of his career.

Nordhaus developed integrated assessment models (IAMs) that combine economic theory with climate science, providing a framework for understanding the interactions between human activity and the environment. His DICE and RICE models are widely used in research on climate-change economics and policy, offering insights into the economic impacts of global warming and informing international climate policy discussions, including those by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

In addition to his research, Nordhaus has held leadership roles in academia and public service, including serving as president of the American Economic Association, provost of Yale University, economic adviser to President Jimmy Carter, and chair of the Boston Federal Reserve Bank. He is affiliated with the National Bureau of Economic Research and the Cowles Foundation for Research, and is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society.

Nordhaus is the author of several influential books on climate economics, including "A Question of Balance," "The Climate Casino: Risk, Uncertainty, and Economics for a Warming World," and "The Spirit of Green: The Economics of Collisions and Contagions in a Crowded World." In these works, he addresses topics such as carbon pricing, sustainable economic policy, and international cooperation on climate change. Nordhaus has advocated for carbon taxes as a tool for addressing climate change, contributing to ongoing debates in environmental economics and climate policy. His academic and policy work continues to influence global approaches to climate change and economic sustainability.
