William Lewis

William Lewis began his career in journalism as the editor of The Daily Telegraph from 2006 to 2009. He played a significant role in uncovering the MPs' expenses scandal, a feat that earned him the "Journalist of the Year" award at the 2010 British Press Awards. Lewis then joined News International as group general manager in September 2010, during an era of crisis marked by a phone-hacking scandal. Here, he led efforts to modernize the company and streamline its digital newsrooms, earning him a place on the Management and Standards Committee at News Corp in July 2011.

On January 21, 2014, Lewis was appointed interim CEO of Dow Jones and Company, later confirmed as CEO and publisher of The Wall Street Journal on May 9, 2014. During his tenure, the staff of The Wall Street Journal won a Pulitzer Prize in 2019, a testament to the high-quality journalism practiced under his leadership. As a critic of technology companies and their role in the spread of fake news, Lewis led negotiations with Apple and Facebook regarding content licensing and distribution. His active involvement in the journalism industry continued post his tenure at Dow Jones, when he co-founded The News Movement in 2021, a digital news company focused on countering misinformation.

In November 2023, Lewis was appointed CEO and publisher of The Washington Post. Following his appointment, he enacted a reorganization of the newsroom, creating a new division focused on reporting for social media and service journalism. His contributions were recognized with an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws from Bristol University in 2010, an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters from the University of Lincoln in the same year, and an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science from Cass Business School in 2019. In 2023, he was also appointed as a Knight Bachelor as part of the Prime Minister's Resignation Honours.
