Will Chesney

Will Chesney is a retired U.S. Navy SEAL, combat veteran, and bestselling author whose career placed him at the center of significant military operations. A Texas native, Chesney joined the United States Navy and, after completing BUD/S Class 246, was stationed in Virginia Beach, serving as a SEAL on multiple global deployments. For much of his career, Chesney was a member of the United States Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU), also known as SEAL Team Six, serving as both an operator and a handler of military working dogs. Following a deployment to Afghanistan, he completed the basic handlers' course and spent the next year training in K-9, where he was paired with Cairo, a Belgian Malinois.

Chesney and Cairo worked together on hundreds of operations in the war on terrorism. Cairo was among the first U.S. military members on the ground in Pakistan during Operation Neptune Spear, which resulted in the elimination of Osama bin Laden. After the mission, Cairo's role became public, highlighting the contributions of military working dogs and their handlers.

A grenade explosion led to Chesney's medical retirement after 13 years of service. He received several medals and commendations, including a Silver Star and a Purple Heart. The injuries from the blast resulted in a brain injury and PTSD, leading to ongoing health challenges. Chesney found support through his continued bond with Cairo, whom he later adopted and cared for until the dog's passing from cancer.

Chesney is the author of "No Ordinary Dog," co-written with Joe Layden, which tells the story of his partnership with Cairo. He also wrote a young readers version titled "Warrior Dog." In addition to his writing, Chesney is involved in supporting veterans with traumatic brain injuries and offers keynote speaking, team-building programs, and performance coaching. As a keynote speaker, Chesney addresses topics such as military service, veterans' issues, mental health, authorship, and the role of military working dogs, drawing on his experiences in the Navy and special operations.
