Wendy Sherman

Wendy Sherman is an American diplomat who served as the United States deputy secretary of state. Sherman held academic positions as professor of the practice of public leadership and director of the Center for Public Leadership at Harvard Kennedy School, and served as a senior counselor at Albright Stonebridge Group. She was also a senior fellow at Harvard Kennedy School's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs.

Sherman, trained as a social worker, was director of EMILY's List, director of Maryland's office of child welfare, and founding president of the Fannie Mae Foundation. During the Clinton administration, Sherman served as counselor of the United States Department of State and as special advisor to President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. She also served as North Korea policy coordinator, playing a key role in negotiations related to North Korea's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.

Under Secretaries of State Hillary Clinton and John Kerry, Sherman served as under secretary of state for political affairs, the fourth-ranking official in the U.S. Department of State. In that capacity, she was the lead negotiator for the Iran nuclear deal. Sherman was later nominated to serve as United States deputy secretary of state under Secretary Antony Blinken.
