Wale

Olubowale Victor Akintimehin, known professionally as Wale, is an American rapper, songwriter and poet from Washington, D.C. He emerged from the city’s go-go–influenced music scene in the mid-2000s, gaining early attention after his 2006 song “Dig Dug (Shake It)” became a local hit. His growing profile led to national exposure, including early support from producer Mark Ronson, who signed him to Allido Records. During this period, Wale built a reputation through mixtapes, live performances and media coverage, positioning himself as one of the leading voices of the D.C. rap movement.

Wale signed with Interscope Records in 2008 and released his debut studio album, “Attention Deficit,” in 2009. While commercial expectations were hindered by limited distribution, the album was well received by critics and established his lyrical style, which blended introspection, cultural commentary and regional identity. In 2011, Wale joined Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group, appearing on the label’s “Self Made Vol. 1” compilation before releasing his second album, “Ambition,” later that year. The project expanded his mainstream presence and included the hit single “Lotus Flower Bomb.”

His third studio album, “The Gifted,” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 2013, marking a critical and commercial high point. He followed with “The Album About Nothing” in 2015, inspired by his long-standing connection to the television series “Seinfeld,” which also debuted at No. 1. Subsequent releases included “Shine” in 2017, “Wow… That’s Crazy” in 2019 and “Folarin II” in 2021, projects that showcased a more personal and reflective approach while reinforcing his reputation as a technically skilled lyricist.

Beyond music, Wale is known for his outspoken commentary on mental health, race, fandom culture and the music industry. He has also maintained a visible presence in professional wrestling culture and poetry, releasing written work alongside his recordings. Over the course of his career, Wale has remained closely identified with Washington, D.C., frequently incorporating the city’s culture and perspective into his work while sustaining a long-running career marked by reinvention and critical respect.
