Virginia Dignum

Virginia Dignum is Professor of Responsible Artificial Intelligence at Umeå University in Sweden, where she leads the AI Policy Lab. Before her academic career, Dignum spent more than 12 years in consultancy and system development, focusing on expert systems and knowledge management, and later earned her doctorate from Utrecht University. Her research addresses responsible artificial intelligence, human-agent teamwork, and human-centered AI.

Dignum holds the Wallenberg Chair on Responsible Artificial Intelligence and serves as Scientific Director of WASP-HS. Her research centers on the specification, verification, and monitoring of ethical and societal principles for intelligent autonomous systems. She has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed articles in international journals, conferences, and workshops. Her book, "Responsible Artificial Intelligence: developing and using AI in a responsible way," was published by Springer-Nature, and "The AI Paradox" was published by Princeton University Press.

Dignum has contributed to global AI governance as a member of the United Nations Secretary General's Artificial Intelligence Advisory Body, the Global Partnership on AI, UNESCO's expert group on AI recommendations, the OECD's Expert Group on AI, and as founder of ALLAI, the Dutch AI Alliance. She also co-chairs the World Economic Forum Global Future Council on AI and chairs the ACM Technology Policy Council.

Dignum is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences and a Fellow of the European Artificial Intelligence Association. She holds affiliations as Guest Professor at the Civic AI Lab, University of Amsterdam, and Honorary Professorial Fellow at the University of Melbourne. Dignum received the Nordic DAIR Awards Lifetime Achievement in AI. She is recognized for her expertise on the ethical and societal dimensions of artificial intelligence and is frequently invited to speak on the future of intelligent systems.
