Vijay Pande

Dr. Vijay Pande is a Trinidadian-American computational biologist, entrepreneur, and venture capitalist whose career spans academic research, scientific computing, and technology investment. As a professor of chemistry at Stanford University, where he also held courtesy appointments in structural biology and computer science, Pande directed the Stanford Biophysics Program and focused his research on computational methods for molecular dynamics, protein folding, and drug design. He held the title of Henry Dreyfus Professor of Chemistry and served as director of the biophysics program. His academic background includes a physics degree from Princeton University, a doctorate from MIT, and a postdoctoral Miller Fellowship at UC Berkeley.

Pande is known for founding the "Folding@home" distributed computing project. He developed distributed computing methodologies to advance the simulation of protein and nucleic acid kinetics and thermodynamics. As director of Folding@home, Pande led efforts to simulate protein folding dynamics and make quantitative comparisons with experimental results, a significant milestone in computational biology. His research also addressed computational methods for drug design, particularly in the context of protein misfolding and diseases such as Alzheimer's and Huntington's disease. Pande co-founded Globavir Biosciences, translating research advances into a startup focused on discovering treatments for diseases including dengue fever and Ebola.

Pande became a general partner at Andreessen Horowitz, where he founded the firm's Bio + Health Fund, investing in life sciences and healthcare. As the founding investor of the Bio Fund, he led investments at the intersection of biology and computer science, including applications in computation, machine learning, and artificial intelligence in healthcare, digital therapeutics, diagnostics, and other scientific advances applied to industry. He served on the boards of companies such as Freenome, Insitro, Nautilus Biotechnology, Omada Health, and Scribe Therapeutics, a CRISPR company co-founded by Nobel Laureate Jennifer Doudna.

Pande later co-founded VZVC, a Bay Area venture firm focused on AI-driven healthcare, alongside startup investor Zack Werner. VZVC invests in technology-enabled healthcare startups addressing challenges in care quality, access, and cost, with a focus on consumer-driven health services and preventive diagnostics. The firm emphasizes AI for healthcare delivery and clinical trials, particularly supporting companies building proprietary biological datasets and foundation models.

Pande has written for Time, STAT News, Fortune, Scientific American, and the New York Times. He advocates for a healthcare model centered on healthspan and prevention, and discusses the importance of consumer agency in health.
