Valerie Red-Horse Mohl

Valerie Red-Horse Mohl is an American investment banker, entrepreneur, and filmmaker of Cherokee ancestry whose career spans high finance and independent cinema. Red-Horse Mohl is a former CEO of two FINRA broker/dealers, Native Nations Securities and Red-Horse Securities, recognized as the first Native American female-owned broker/dealers. Her foundational training began while studying film at UCLA, where she worked part-time for Mike Milken at Drexel Burnham Lambert, gaining experience in capital markets, debt and equity structures, and leverage. She graduated cum laude from the UCLA Theater Arts Department and furthered her studies at the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute.

Red-Horse Mohl has focused her financial career on serving Native American communities. She founded Native Nations Securities, the first Native American-owned investment bank, providing financial services tailored to tribal finance, economic development, and youth training programs. She later established Red-Horse Financial Group, Inc., which has completed numerous financing and advisory transactions for tribal clients, positioning her as an expert in tribal finance. Throughout her career, Red-Horse Mohl has raised, structured, and managed more than $4 billion in capital. She served as Deputy Chief Investment Officer for Responsible Investing at the New York City Comptroller's Office, overseeing the city's five public pension systems and leading initiatives in responsible investing, ESG, climate strategies, and DEI assessments.

In addition to her finance work, Red-Horse Mohl has developed a portfolio as a filmmaker dedicated to Native American storytelling. She founded Red-Horse Native Productions, Inc., collaborating with American Indian tribal nations to bring Native stories to the screen. Her debut feature, "Naturally Native," was written, produced, co-directed, and starred in by Red-Horse Mohl; the film was funded by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. She also produced the PBS/ITVS documentary "True Whispers: The Story of The Navajo Code Talkers" and its prequel "Choctaw Code Talkers," in collaboration with Gale Anne Hurd of Valhalla Entertainment. Her documentary "Mankiller" chronicles Wilma Mankiller, the first female elected Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. Red-Horse Mohl has produced, directed, and written approximately 12 film and television programs.

Red-Horse Mohl's work extends into education, public service, and advocacy. She was appointed to the U.S. Treasury Advisory Committee on Racial Equity, focusing on access to capital. She serves on the Advisory Board of Stanford University's Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity and teaches an undergraduate course on entrepreneurship for social impact and racial equity at Stanford. Red-Horse Mohl has founded nonprofit organizations focused on women and youth empowerment. She was inducted into the National Association of Women Business Owners Hall of Fame and is a member of the Directors Guild and the Screen Actors Guild. Red-Horse Mohl's expertise in investment banking, tribal finance, and Native American filmmaking positions her as a significant figure in American business and culture.
